SIM Card for International Students in USA: A Guide

A SIM card for international students in the USA should give you a US number before you leave home, with no credit history needed. Unlimit Mobile's US SIM card for international students does that: a prepaid eSIM with unlimited local calls and texts and 5G+ data, for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months. See our student phone plans to start.

This guide is written for students heading to a US university from India, though it works for anyone starting a degree there. It covers why your US number matters, what to look for in a plan, when to set it up and how to keep your number through breaks.

Why do international students need a US phone number?

Your first weeks in the US are full of sign-ups, and most of them ask for a local number. An Indian number on roaming, or a data-only travel eSIM with no number at all, won't get you through them.

In your first weeksWhy a US number matters
Opening a bank accountUS banks ask for a domestic number for OTP verification and account security.
Renting an apartmentLandlords and property managers expect a local number to reach you.
Social Security and tax IDA US phone number is required for Social Security and tax ID (ITIN) verification.
Healthcare and insuranceHealthcare portals, appointments and insurance sign-ups ask for a local contact number.
University, rides and friendsYour university, ride-sharing apps and new friends reach you on it, and one-time codes arrive by text.

So a student SIM is less about data and more about having a working US number on day one. For a side-by-side look at roaming, airport SIMs and data-only eSIMs, see the best SIM card for a USA trip, compared.

What should a student SIM card in the USA include?

  • A US number before you land. Your eSIM arrives by email, and your number goes live 48 hours before your travel date.
  • No credit check or contract. New arrivals have no US credit history. Plans are prepaid, and your identity is checked with your passport (eKYC).
  • Unlimited local calls and texts. Call your landlord, your university and new friends without counting minutes.
  • Data for life away from campus Wi-Fi. Maps, rides and video calls home on the way to class, and a hotspot for your laptop when you need one.
  • A plan length that fits your term. Pay for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months at once.
  • Help when you need it. Support by email and WhatsApp, 24/7, from people who've moved abroad themselves.

Which plan suits a semester or a full year?

Plans run 1, 3, 6 or 12 months, so one plan can cover a semester or the whole academic year, and longer plans cost less per month. For data, think about how much of your day you spend away from campus and home Wi-Fi:

  • Unlimit Loki, 2GB: you're almost always on Wi-Fi and use data for maps and messages.
  • Unlimit Rizz, 10GB: a daily commute, social media and some video calls.
  • Unlimit Slay, unlimited: 25GB at full speed for heavy everyday use, then 128 Kbps (fair use).
  • Unlimit GOAT, unlimited: 50GB at full speed, for streaming lectures or using your phone as a hotspot for your laptop.

Students pay the same prices as everyone else: there's no separate student price, but the activation fee is waived. Every detail is on our USA SIM card and eSIM page for students. When should you get your US SIM before leaving India?

Once your visa is sorted and your flight is booked. Buy your plan, give your travel date at checkout, and your number goes live 48 hours before you fly, or within 1–2 hours of paying if you travel within two days. Then share your US number early: with your university, your housing and whoever is meeting you at the airport.

  1. Pick your plan and how long you need it.
  2. Complete eKYC with a photo of your passport after paying.
  3. Scan your eSIM QR code from the email, at home on Wi-Fi.
  4. Land connected and switch your mobile data to the US line.

Your phone must be unlocked and eSIM-compatible: check it on the eSIM devices list. If it isn't, a USA physical SIM can be posted to you within India; order it at least 8 days before you fly.

How do you keep your US number through breaks and after graduation?

Renew before your plan ends

When a plan's validity ends, your number is suspended for 7 days. Renew or switch plans in those 7 days to keep it; after that, it's disconnected and can't be recovered. You can recharge from your account on the website or in the Unlimit Mobile app.

Going home for the summer

Switch to a lower-cost plan to keep your US number while you're in India, so it's still yours when term starts again.

Already have a US number?

If you have a US number from an earlier stay, port it to Unlimit Mobile for free and keep it.

Keeping your Indian number too

An eSIM sits beside your Indian SIM, so one phone keeps both numbers active. Here's how to keep receiving Indian bank OTPs while you study.

Student SIM checklist before you fly

  • Phone unlocked and on the eSIM compatible list
  • Passport ready for eKYC
  • Flight booked and travel date to hand
  • A plan length that covers your semester or year
  • A data level chosen for life away from Wi-Fi
  • Your US number shared with your university and housing once it's live
  • A reminder to renew before your plan ends
