UK Mobile Number Format: Examples and How to Write One

A UK mobile number has 11 digits and starts with 07. Written for someone in the UK it looks like 07700 900123; written for someone abroad it becomes +44 7700 900123: the country code 44 replaces the first 0. That is the whole format. The rest of this guide covers how to write one on forms, how to call one from India, what the other UK numbers mean, and how to get your own UK number before you land.

The example numbers in this guide come from ranges Ofcom, the UK’s telecoms regulator, keeps for TV and film, so they don’t belong to anyone.

UK mobile number example

Here is the same mobile number written the three ways you’ll meet it:

  • In the UK: 07700 900123
  • International: +44 7700 900123
  • Dialled from India: 00 44 7700 900123 (or +44 7700 900123 from a mobile)

People usually group a mobile number as five digits, a space, then six (07700 900123), though you’ll also see 07700 900 123. The spaces don’t change the number; they only make it easier to read.

UK phone number format, digit by digit

  • 0: the trunk prefix, dialled only inside the UK.
  • 7: mobile numbers sit in the 07 range.
  • The other 9 digits: the subscriber’s number.

So a UK mobile number is 11 digits with the 0, and 10 digits after +44. If a form rejects your number, check you haven’t written both: +44 07700 900123 is wrong, because the 0 goes when the 44 comes in.

How to write a UK phone number on forms

  • UK forms (a bank, your university, a landlord): 07700 900123, or the digits with no spaces if the box won’t take them.
  • International forms and apps (WhatsApp, visa portals, airline bookings): pick United Kingdom (+44) as the country and type 7700 900123, without the first 0.
  • Writing it out in full: +44 7700 900123 works everywhere, from email signatures to your CV.

Which country’s numbers start with +44?

The United Kingdom’s: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man share +44 too. India’s code is +91, so a number that starts with +44 and then 7 is a UK mobile.

Other UK numbers you’ll see

  • 01 and 02: landlines. London numbers start with 020, for example 020 7946 0018.
  • 03: numbers charged like a call to a landline, used by many banks, councils and universities.
  • 0800 and 0808: free to call.
  • 09: premium rate: these cost a lot more to call.
  • 070: “personal numbers” that forward calls. They start with 07 but aren’t mobiles, and can cost more to call.

And three short numbers worth saving on day one: 999 or 112 for emergencies, 111 for urgent medical help that isn’t an emergency, and 101 to reach the police when it isn’t an emergency.

Why students need a UK mobile number

Banks, landlords and universities in the UK expect a local number. It’s where they send one-time codes, viewing times and messages about your course, and an Indian number on roaming is easy to miss and costly to keep answering. A UK number also lets classmates, employers and delivery drivers reach you at local rates.
